For Gauff, Richardson’s very public setback and triumphant return to the Olympics are very inspiring. Gauff highlights Richardson’s attitude throughout the whole ordeal, noting that if she wasn’t as mentally strong as she is, she might not be as great on the court.

“I just love how confident she was in her talent and how confident she was in her game… I think that just makes her even greater,” said Gauff.

She also gave a nod to Biles, noting how outspoken she’s been about mental health in sports, how it’s humanized her, and how it’s really helped her learn so much about herself and the power of her platform.

“Sometimes those athletes make it seem so easy, which even though I am one and I know it’s not, but sometimes you just look at other people, and you’re like, ‘it just seems so easy to them.’ But it’s good to see them be vulnerable, and I can learn from it a lot,” she added.

The interview showed how even Black women at the top of their game can always learn something from a fellow sister. Check out a clip from the heartwarming interview below!
