On Tuesday, the Penguin Random House announced that its company will publish the books of the 44th US President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama. It is common practice for former presidents to write a memoir after leaving office; however, there’s nothing common about the Obamas’ book deal. By securing a reported more than $60 million book deal, the Obamas have set a new record for presidential book deals. Although the rights for their books were sold together, Barack and Michelle will reflect on their White House years separately.
Three of Obama’s books (“Dreams of My Father”, “Audacity of Hope- Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream” and “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters”) were published by the Penguin Random House. The chief executive of Penguin Random House, Markus Dohle said of the deal:
“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our publishing partnership with President and Mrs. Obama. With their words and their leadership, they changed the world, and every day, with the books we publish at Penguin Random House, we strive to do the same. Now, we are very much looking forward to working together with President and Mrs. Obama to make each of their books global publishing events of unprecedented scope and significance.”
A large part of the Obamas’ book proceeds will be donated to the Obama Foundation and other charities. We just have one question….can we pre-order a copy?
