Phillis Wheatley was the second published African American poet and first published African American woman.
Langston Hughes was a poet, social activist, playwright and novelist. He is best known for his involvement in the Harlem Renaissance.
Zora Neale Hurston was a novelist during the Harlem Renaissance era. She authored many books, including Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Maya Angelou is an African American author and poet credited with several autobiographies, essays and iconic poems. She was also the first African American female poet laureate in U.S. history.
Nikki Giovanni is a writer, activist and educator. She was important in the Black Arts movement and has written more than two dozen books, including poetry, children’s books and essays.
Toni Morrison is an author and the first African American woman to receive a Nobel Prize. Some of her literary works include The Bluest Eye, Beloved and Song of Solomon.
