When 7-year-old Nicholas Buamah authored a book to help his classmates build their vocabulary as his mother assisted him, he never imagined that the book would go on to be sold in Barnes & Noble and on Amazon. He now has another milestone to celebrate as his book was recently added to the Library of Congress catalog.
“Kayla & Kyle The Walking Dictionaries: Election Day” is an animated book for elementary school-aged children that encourages them to expand their vocabularies. Buamah’s mother, Danielle, shared in an interview with Black Enterprise Magazine: “I developed the character of Kayla when Nicholas was younger to help teach him expanded vocabulary. After being praised by his first-grade teacher for using the word ‘collaborate’ during his first week of school, I asked Nicholas what he thought about writing a book to help his friends expand their vocabularies. He thought it was a great idea, as long as one of the main characters could be a male figure, and that’s when he created Kyle.”
He sold out copies of his book within one hour at an initial book signing at a Snellville, Georgia Barnes & Noble. Afterwards, patrons began to return to the store requesting copies of Buamah’s book and created such a frenzy that the store invited him back to begin their relationship with the young entrepreneur.
This election day-themed book is the first in Buamah’s “The Walking Dictionaries” series. Volume 2 is scheduled to be released during Summer 2019. Buamah’s goal is to have his books available in every elementary school library in the United States.
When he’s not writing, you can find energetic Buamah rooting for his favorite basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, or playing chess or tennis. In addition to continuing to author his interactive and informative vocabulary books, he also aspires to one day attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to become a mechanical engineer.
