Washington state officials recently signed a bill that will change the Renton Highlands Post Office to the James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix Post Office.

According to the Seattle Times, the post office is located less than a mile from the Jimi Hendrix Memorial where the Hendrix is buried.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Adam Smith and was supported by Washington state’s senators.

“I am honored to join in paying tribute to rock and roll icon and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix with the renaming of the Renton Highlands Post Office as the James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix Post Office Building,” Smith said in a statement. “This designation will further celebrate Hendrix’s deep connection to the Puget Sound region and help ensure that his creative legacy will be remembered by our community and inspire future generations.”

The renaming of the post office is another public tribute that Seattle has created to recognize Hendrix and his contributions to his hometown and throughout the world.

Although his solo career lasted less than four years, Hendrix’s contribution to the culture can still be seen and heard in artists of the past and present. From Prince to Lenny Kravitz to John Mayer, few musicians, especially guitarists, can deny his influence.

We’re unsure if Hendrix ever envisioned the love he is still receiving 40 years after his untimely death, but we are convinced that this is one of those moments when he’d say “excuse me as I kiss the sky…”
