The students in Terrance Sims’ sixth grade book club are celebrating Black History Month by recreating the book covers of influential Black figures they’re learning about. From our Forever First Lady, to the revolutionary Malcolm X and Assata Shakur, to a young, Black girl on a journey to loving the skin she’s in. Check out their recreations below as the kids channel their inner Black power and excellence.
1. ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama
Since being released in November of 2018, Mrs. Obama’s memoir has become the best-selling book of 2018 and has sold over three million copies.
2. ‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’ by Alex Haley
The classic book was originally published in 1965 and is considered of the most influential twentieth-century autobiographies about an African American.
3. ‘Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur
The autobiographical book was published in 1987. Known as one of the greatest living revolutionaries, Shakur tells her story in her own words.
4. ‘The Skin I’m In’ by Sharon G. Flake
The realistic fiction book, which was published in 1998, follows a seventh grade girl who endures colorism as she goes on a journey from low self-esteem to self-love and self-worth.
Along with the photos, Sims shared on Instagram that we can expect more photos of his students paying homage to those who paved the way next Friday. We can’t wait to see and add more!
