Trayvon Martin, who wanted to attend the University of Miami or Florida A&M University, had big dreams. Those dreams included one day flying the skies as a pilot or pursuing a career as an aviation mechanic. However, his life was tragically cut short at the age of 17 when he was wrongfully targeted and killed by a self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman in 2012.

His dream of flying was honored in 2017 by his mother Sybrina Fulton’s alma mater of Florida Memorial University, who awarded Trayvon with a posthumous Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation. To this day, people across the nation continue to honor and remember Trayvon and how he sparked a movement – especially on his birthday of February 5.

#TrayvonMartin would have been 24 years old today. He might have been working a 9-5 or corporate job by now. He might be a teacher or an astronaut. Maybe he would be in love.

Today, we remember that smiling boy who was just trying to get home in the rain. A boy who was singled out, targeted, criminalized, and adultified like too many other Black boys simply for being Black. May you forever rest in power, #TrayvonMartin. pic.twitter.com/YG4yKeuPNJ
