Mental Health Is Wealth!
An entrepreneur recently created a mental health app designed to support Black women, Black Enterprise reports.
Jade. D. Kearney is the creator of She Matters, a new platform and app explicitly designed to help Black women struggling with their mental health. Kearney said she was inspired by her mental health journey, particularly during a bout of depression she experienced after her daughter’s birth.
“I struggled with postpartum anxiety/OCD and could not find resources allocated toward Black women. I realized that our negative cultural stigmas toward mental health blended with maternal medical neglect is a dangerous combination for the mental health of Black mothers. As I began my postpartum mental health journey, I felt it was only right to create a space where Black women could go to where they felt supported and safe,” Kearney told Black Enterprise.
Realizing the scarcity of services catered specifically to Black mothers, Kearney began to develop the resource she wished someone would have created for her. The new app will help users connect to resources and culturally competent therapists that specialize in their needs. In addition to the app, there are also informative articles helping Black women understand various aspects of mental health and new information linked to women’s issues while also offering multiple tools such as daily planners and in-person events.
“When I struggled through postpartum anxiety, one of the hardest things was trying to sift through all the information on the internet – much of which did not apply to me as a Black woman. The She Matters platform cuts out the middleman and gets you resources that are useful to Black women at a very crucial period in any mother’s life,” said Kearney.
The She Matters platform is currently available for users. No word yet on when the app will be released. To sign up for notifications and join the community, visit www.shematters.io.
