Portraits of Black Soldiers, American Civil War: according to The Library of Congress, 29,000 of the 100,000 Black soldiers who served during the Civil War died of disease. Those who became ill died at a rate two and a half times higher than their white counterparts. Many white medical officers were unwilling to treat black units, and there were only three black physicians serving the Union Army’s 166 black regiments. Happy Veteran’s Day! Today also marks the anniversary of the end of World War 1 on November 11, 1918. During the first world war around 400 thousand Afro-Americans served in the military in segregated units, around 300 thousand of those were stationed in France, and despite fears, racism and discrimination more than 50 thousand would eventually see combat. Earning the respect and admiration of the French for their bravery and helping to save France, many black soldiers were awarded the Croix de Guerre, which was France’s highest military honor. After the war some black soldiers made the choice between facing racism at home in America or finally having freedom in France. Today I’m apprecitaing the most handsome vet, my grandaddy Robert York (he’s the one with the cigarette)! He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. I never got to meet him but I know he was an outstanding father and I feel that I would have been a big time grandaddy’s girl! Thank you to all the brave veterans who’ve served and protected our country! Happy #VeteransDay
