HBO recently released the trailer for the new adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me, The Root reports.
The adaptation of Coates’ award-winning nonfiction work is set to be released on HBO, featuring an all-star cast. The trailer includes actors Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Oprah Winfrey, Mahershala Ali, Wendell Pierce, Kendrick Sampson, MJ Rodriguez, Jharrel Jerome, and Yara Shahidi. There are also musical performances from artists Ledisi, Black Thought, and T.I., as well as several prominent activists, including Angela Davis, who opens up the trailer.
Between the World and Me was originally released as a book in 2015 and was written by Coates as a love letter to his young son, chronicling his journey as a Black man in America, littered with peaks, valleys, and cautionary tales. The HBO adaptation features documentary footage from Coates’ life, recitations of his written words, archival footage, animation, and images of Howard University, Coates’ alma mater and a place he speaks fondly of in the book.
The film was executive produced by Coates alongside Howard Alumna and This Is Us actress, Susan Kelechi Watson and director Kamilah Forbes, who also helmed the Apollo Theater’s 2018 stage adaptation. The film brings stage elements and stirring performances together to create a truly moving work of art.
