They woke up flawless!
The historic inauguration had many beautiful moments as the country collectively breathed a breath of fresh air with the previous administration’s removal. Some of our favorite moments came from seeing the head-turning looks from Madam Vice President Kamala Harris and our Forever Flotus Michelle Obama. The stunning outfits were created by Black designers, which only added to the Black excellence of the day.
The vice president wore a beautiful coat with a regal purple-blue color, designed by a young, queer, American designer, Christopher John Rogers. According to Symone Sanders, Harris’s senior advisor and chief spokesperson, this color choice wasn’t random.
“It was an ode to Shirley Chisholm, but it was also an ode to bipartisanship.”
Chisholm, the first Black woman to run for president on the democratic ticket, used purple during her campaign. Harris’s presidential campaign incorporated purple, red, and yellow, paying homage to Chisholm, according to The Guardian.
Her mixing of the Democrat blue and Republican red to create purple mixes Republican red and Democrat blue was a nod to the Biden-Harris campaigns calls for bipartisanship to build the country back better.
On the eve of the inauguration, Harris wore a tailored camel coat by Black American designer Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss. Jean-Raymond has been pushing against unjust narratives through his work. He also converted his New York studio at the beginning of the pandemic into a donation center for N95 masks and latex gloves. He also used $5,000 of his own money to buy supplies, plus an additional $50,000 to aid creative businesses.
Our Forever Flotus wore a dramatic long burgundy overcoat, designed by Sergio Hudson, a Black designer from South Carolina. She paired this show-stopping outfit with flowing tresses, which was the envy of all across social media. Her look was a noticeable departure from her subdued attire and hair from the previous inauguration.
