He’s got an S on his chest!
Ta-Nehisi Coates is slated to write a new Superman movie produced by JJ Abrams, Comicbook reports.
Coates is a best-selling author who has risen to national prominence for his essays, books, and comics depicting Black life. Now he has partnered with industry veteran JJ Abrams to pen a Superman reboot in partnership with WarnerMedia.
The last solo Superman film was 2013’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as the beloved hero. The movie birthed two sequels: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. A recent CW series, Superman & Lois, reported significant numbers for the network. As a result, the demand from fans for another solo Superman movie has been through the roof. Now, they’ll get it, thanks to Coates and Abrams.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films, and Bad Robot is an honor. I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero,” Coates said.
There have been no reports of a director yet and no guarantee that Cavill will be recast, but Warner Bros. is getting the ball rolling. Abrams spoke about the significance of Coates being a part of the team, saying, “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.”
Toby Emmerich, Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, echoed those sentiments, saying, “Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world. We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”
There is no word yet on when the new reboot will make it to theaters, but we can’t wait!
