She isn’t new to being first!
Judge Debra M. Brown is making history as the first Black woman named chief federal judge in Mississippi, the Clarion-Ledger reports.
Brown is currently a U.S. District Judge, appointed to the federal bench in 2013 by forever President Barack Obama, making history at the time as the first Black woman to become a district judge in Mississippi.
Now, she’s back for more crowns, recently named the new chief judge for the Northern District of Mississippi. Brown’s appointment makes her the first Black woman ever to hold the title.
She will be replacing Chief Judge Sharion Aycock, the first woman to be named as a federal district judge in the state. Aycock will remain on the bench but is ending her seven-year term as chief, Local Memphis reports.
Brown will take the bench soon, set to be sworn in during an upcoming public ceremony.
