She’s back just in time for the new school year!
A 95-year-old South Carolina crossing guard is coming out of retirement for the students, Live 5 News reports.
Mrs. Estella Williams made headlines last year when people learned of the then 94-year-old crossing guard. Williams had been serving as a guard, keeping students safe for 25 years, and happened to be the oldest in the state of South Carolina and one of the oldest in the country. Her son-in-law initially convinced her to be a crossing guard for a few days and she just fell in love with it. 25 years later, she told reporters that while she loved it, she was wrapping up her duties to head into retirement. It seems now that it was short-lived.
Now 95 years old, Mrs. Williams was enjoying retirement but a call for crossing guards from Anderson School District Five has brought her back to duty. While she served the Westside High students for more than two decades, she said she just can’t bear to leave students out there knowing the district needs more help. Williams wants to make sure she does her job to get the students in the building safely.
A fixture in her community, students can expect to see Williams again this year, spreading her joy and positivity while also making sure everyone is safe.
“I feel good…I just love it…I just don’t like to sit around, I like to stay busy,” Williams told reporters.
