This isn’t his first time at the Super Bowl!
Killens is set to make football history by becoming the first person to both play in and officiate a Super Bowl, according to NBC Sports. The NFL recently announced that Killens will serve as the umpire in Super Bowl LVIII, marking his fifth season as an NFL official and his first Super Bowl assignment.
Killens brings a unique perspective to the Super Bowl, having previously played in Super Bowl XXXIV as a backup linebacker for the Titans in their loss to the Rams. During that game, he made a notable tackle on special teams.
A former third-round pick of the Houston Oilers in 1996 out of Penn State, Killens enjoyed a playing career that spanned several teams, including the Oilers/Titans, 49ers, and Seahawks. After hanging up his playing cleats, he transitioned to officiating, starting at the college level in the AAC and later in the professional ranks with the Alliance of American Football.
Now, 24 years after his last Super Bowl appearance, Killens takes the field as an official in Super Bowl LVIII, adding another chapter to his football legacy and showcasing his versatility and contributions to the NFL’s history.
