He’s taken over for Jim Harbaugh!

37-year-old Sherrone Moore has been named the new head football coach for the University of Michigan, The Grio reports. Moore joined the Michigan Wolverines in 2018 under Jim Harbaugh’s leadership, serving as a tight end coach. He was then promoted to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2021, the Wolverines recovering from a dismal shortened pandemic season to a three-year victory lap that included the school’s first national title in 26 years.

The Kansas native is a former Oklahoma offensive lineman, launching his coaching career in 2009 as a graduate assistant at Louisville. He’s begun to make a name for himself over the years and Harbaugh hired him to join the coveted Michigan team for that reason alone. Under Moore’s leadership, the offensive line has become one of the best in the country and the team has earned three straight Big Ten championships in addition to their national title.

“Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, especially the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football. He is a dynamic, fierce, and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he mentors. The players love playing for him and being with him in the building every day,” said Warde Manuel, Michigan’s athletic director.

Now Moore has earned a historic promotion, becoming the first Black head football coach in the program’s 144-year history. Just two days after Harbaugh announced he’d be leaving to coach the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore has been named the new head coach, earning a five-year, $5.5 million contract with guaranteed annual raises and bonus opportunities. It is Moore’s first time officially being a head coach, and Harbaugh said he’s confident he’s the right man for the job.

“You’ve already got a glimpse of the shining star that he is. He’s just phenomenal, so smart, works so hard at it,” Harbaugh previously told reporters.

Moore issued a statement thanking Harbaugh for his leadership and affirming that he is more than ready to usher the Wolverines into their next era of victory.

“I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for the faith that he has displayed in me over the past six years and for supporting my growth as a football coach during that time…I have been preparing my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place to be head coach than at the University of Michigan. We will do everything each day as a TEAM to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played at Michigan for the past 144 years. Our standards will not change,” said Moore.
