At just 10 years old, she has already achieved a milestone many performers only dream of landing a role at the prestigious Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
Gabby Tennor stars as Jesus in the production of El Niño, an opera that beautifully narrates the story of the nativity, Fox 5 DC reports. Hailing from Maryland, Gabby and her mother, Barbara, embark on a five-hour journey to New York City twice a week to partake in the month-long run of the show. On opening night, Gabby performed in front of thousands without a hint of nerves, though her mother couldn’t hold back her tears.
“You look around you, and you have a vision of how your life is going to be somehow, and we never thought opera. We are not actors; we are not actresses. We don’t have that background, and to get to that level, I looked around and said, ‘Wow, God is really good,’” Barbara shared, expressing her awe and gratitude.
Originally from Ghana, the Tennor family’s journey to the Metropolitan Opera is not just a testament to talent but also to their deep faith. Gabby is particularly proud to be part of a production that aligns with her Christian beliefs. “I am so glad I can do something that is based on my faith because I’m Christian,” she said. “Let God take you wherever you want to be. It’s not just about yourself; let others help.”
Gabby’s path to the stage has not been without its challenges. Despite her young age, she has faced numerous rejections. Barbara recalled moments when Gabby, tasked with memorizing five pages of lines within 24 hours, would cry during auditions. But through perseverance and hard work, Gabby has shown that dedication pays off. “Wherever you want to be, you can be,” Barbara advised. “But believe that you have to work hard for it because life never comes easy. It’s never simple.”
Despite her rising star status in the opera world, Gabby has other aspirations. She dreams of becoming a pediatrician and excels academically as a fourth-grade straight-A student. Her talents extend beyond the stage—she plays the piano, drums, and soccer, showcasing her versatility and determination.
For those in New York, the El Niño opera runs through May 17th, offering a chance to witness Gabby’s exceptional talent firsthand.
Gabby Tennor is a shining example of how dedication can lead to extraordinary achievements.
