Can we sit in on a class?!

Mo Ivory is an attorney and law professor at the Georgia State College of Law. Before the start of this semester, Ivory took to social media to announce a new course on the “Legal Life” of entertainment mogul Issa Rae, Black Enterprise reports. The class will focus on the legal aspects of Rae’s meteoric rise to the top, dissecting her Hoorae Media company, Viarae prosecco products, and her humble start as the creator of the YouTube web series, ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.”

Issa Rae has long been at the top of my list of inspiring figures to study, so to bring her remarkable career into the classroom is a thrilling opportunity for both my students and me. We’ll explore her journey from YouTube to the big screen, delving into her on-camera achievements and the business and legal intricacies that fuel her success as a writer, producer, director, entrepreneur, and more,” said Ivory via social media.

Ivory is the director of the Center for Entertainment, Sports, and Intellectual Property. In 2019, she debuted the entertainment law course to study the legal side of notable public figures’ careers. Thus far, students taking the “Legal Life” class have studied Ludacris, Kandi Burruss, and Steve Harvey. Now, they will be deep-diving into Rae’s career, with students visited on the first day of class by Rae’s mother, Delyna Diop, brother, Amadou Diop, and sister-in-law, D’Andrea Diop, who also happens to be a fellow GSU Law alumna.

“Thanks to the support of her team, we’ll also have the unique chance to analyze [Rae’s] real-world agreements and discuss how her approach to deals is shaping today’s entertainment landscape. We’re incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity,” explained Ivory.
