The mural was unveiled in conjunction with the school’s 175th anniversary!
Jill Scott was recently honored with a new mural at her alma mater, Philadelphia High School for Girls, in her hometown, NBC Philadelphia reports. The Grammy-award-winning singer was present in North Philadelphia for the ceremony at Girls’ High, which celebrated the school’s 175th anniversary. The new mural, entitled “Luminaries,” honored all the notable women who graduated from the prestigious high school over the years.
The ceremony was a festive gathering with performances and poetry, Scott speaking candidly to attendees about how much the city meant to her. Artist Patrick Dougher designed the mural in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, a nod to the impact of Girls’ High throughout the years.
“I feel so loved; beloved. I NEVER imagined that when I copped 2 [Patrick Dougher] pieces for my collection that he would be the artist to create a mural of ME on THE PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS years later. Patrick, it’s INSPIRING, colorful, and so positively poignant. My heart rejoices,” said Scott via social media.
She went on to thank everyone involved, including Mural Arts Philadelphia, and spoke about the joy of the ceremony and how much it touched her.
“Thank you [Mural Arts] for your dedication and insistence on celebrating expression in my hometown. Thank you – current students and Alumni. Thank you GIRLS HIGH!”
Congrats Jilly from Philly!
