NBA Star Jayson Tatum is looking to bring a WNBA franchise team to his hometown of St. Louis, joining an ownership group that’s proposing a whopping $200 million bid, Essence reports. Tatum has teamed up with St. Louis business leaders Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman in a move that could completely transform women’s basketball in the Lou.
The news comes fresh off of the heels of Tatum’s groundbreaking $315 million contract with the Boston Celtics, the largest in NBA history. With renewed interest in women’s sports, Tatum joins a growing number of athletes looking to help bolster the spotlight and get in on investing in its potential. The new commitment comes just as the WNBA made a rule change, allowing NBA players to acquire ownership stakes in teams.
The ownership group has set their sights on Chaifetz Arena at Saint Louis University as a potential home court, and Tatum’s star power and connections might allow them to pull it off. Tatum is looking to help evolve professional sports and capitalize on the huge momentum the WNBA is having. He now joins other celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg and Allyson Felix who are making power moves on the business side to get behind this resurgence in women athletes.
