The film is a love letter to Black creatives!
A Ma Maniére, French for “In My Own Way,” is a renowned luxury streetwear brand popularized a decade ago by James Whitner. Recently, the brand announced the premiere of its highly anticipated short film, While You Were Sleeping. Directed by the award-winning filmmakers Julien and Justen Turner (Nike, Sesame Street, Beats by Dre), the film delves into the world of Black creativity, highlighting the challenges and triumphs faced by some of the most influential artists and influencers today.
The film blends elements of action and suspense to explore a universe where the concept of the “Black Tax,” a term used to describe the disproportionate burden placed on Black individuals to uplift and support their families and communities, comes to life. While You Were Sleeping highlights the realities of this invisible tax and its impact on Black creatives as they navigate the industry.
Featuring a star-studded cast, including Hebru Brantley, Nina Chanel Abney, and Bimma Williams, the film offers moving visuals to deliver a powerful and thought-provoking narrative that explores cultural exploitation and systemic barriers marginalized creatives face. Whitner expressed his hopes for the short film and what he wants audiences to take away from it.
“The creatives featured in While You Were Sleeping are architects and leaders of culture – many making their on-screen debut in this short film. We wanted this film to reflect their stories, struggles, and triumphs because they’re shaping the future in ways the world often overlooks. Especially as we enter these uncertain times, we hope the audience walks away with a sense of urgency – to value creativity, to challenge exploitation, and to recognize the transformative impact of those who ‘create at all costs,’” said Whitner.
The film comes on the heels of A Ma Maniére’s 10th anniversary and its recently released limited-edition collection of the same name, which united Nike, Jordan Brand, and Converse for only the second time in history. An homage to the power of resilience and a celebration of Black artistry, the film serves as a visual representation of the brand’s commitment to celebrating Black culture and empowering Black creatives.
While You Were Sleeping will make its global premiere on December 12th at London’s Ritzy Brixton Theatre. Following the international debut, the film will have its U.S. premiere at the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem on December 17th, with additional screenings planned for major cities nationwide, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, and Washington, D.C. A week-long public screening will then take place in L.A. from December 18-25 at Hollywood’s Cinelounge.
