It was his first time seeing him play since high school!
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards recently got a welcome surprise during his game against the Hawks in Atlanta, Daily Mail reports. While preparing for the start of the game, Edwards was shocked to see his 82-year-old grandfather, Ben Edwards, sitting courtside. The 23-year-old NBA star ran to his side and hugged him before sitting down for a touching moment. It was the first time the senior Edwards had seen his grandson play since he was in high school.
Ben Edwards lives in the Atlanta area, and when reporters asked him what prompted the surprise, he said that now was as good a time as any to get out and see his grandson.
“Hey man, it’s about time. I’m 82. I’ll be 83 in February. I have to go see him at least once…I feel good. Couldn’t get much better than this here,” said the patriarch.
While the Timberwolves lost the matchup, it was still an excellent game for Edwards, who said he hadn’t seen his grandfather in two years.
“This is my first NBA game with my granddad. Sad I ain’t get the W for him, but I’m just happy he was here. My heart was warm when I seen him. That was great,” said Ant in a post-game interview.
Throughout the game, his grandfather continued to be a highlight, taking interviews and even joking with reporters about how they did their job with all the noise.
“How can you interview anybody with all of this going on?! I know it’s a job…You got good ears?!,” the senior Edwards told one reporter.
It’s always good when an elder comes to town!
