It’s a full-circle moment two decades in the making!
In honor of MLK Day, R&B singer Lucky Daye performed during halftime at the Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game, paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a moving rendition of Sam Cooke’s 1964 classic, “A Change Is Gonna Come.” The performance was extra special as it took place just two days before what would have been Cooke’s 94th birthday.
Accompanied by a live band dressed in all black, Lucky’s performance was a powerful moment for the New Orleans-born artist. It also brought his journey full circle—back in 2005, at 19 years old, he sang the same song during his American Idol audition, earning yes votes from all the judges before being eliminated later in the season. Now, nearly 20 years later, Lucky performed the song again, this time as a multiple Grammy-winning artist who’s collaborated with legends like Keith Sweat, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, and Beyoncé.
“It was an honor to perform at the @nba’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. 🙏🏾 What a game,” Lucky wrote on Instagram, reflecting on the milestone.
