He’s truly soaring to new heights!

At just 17 years old, Ryan Garner has made history as the youngest Black person in North Carolina to earn a private pilot license, WRAL reports. After completing his lessons at a small airport in Indian Trail, he’s now officially a pilot—a dream he’s had since childhood.

Ryan’s initial goal was to join a ground crew, but a conversation with a Delta pilot shifted his focus to the skies. As he prepares for his senior year at West Cabarrus High School’s aviation program, Ryan is not only achieving his dreams but also inspiring future generations. His mother, Melissa Dixon, couldn’t be prouder. “He’s the footprint … he is actually the footprint to future generations to come and say it’s possible,” Dixon said.
