There is still joy to be had in the morning!
Many people in the U.S. woke up to the news that Vice President Kamala Harris has seemingly lost her presidential race against the former 45th president of the United States, with 277 electoral votes to Harris’ 224. Despite the presidential election results, the night was filled with historic firsts for Black people, and we will celebrate them as well and hold fast to our faith. Here are six historic wins on Election Night 2024.
- Monroe Nichols Makes History as the First Black Mayor in the History of Tulsa, Oklahoma
Nichols’ win comes as the fight for reparations for survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre continues. 110-year-old Viola Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the massacre, voted in Oklahoma’s election, proudly casting her vote for VP Kamala Harris.
- Angela Alsobrooks Makes History as the First Black Person Elected to the U.S. Senate in Maryland.
- Lisa Blunt Rochester Makes History as the First Black Person and First Woman Elected to the U.S. Senate in Delaware.
Together, Alsobrooks and Rochester’s historic elections mark the first time in American history that two Black women will simultaneously serve in the U.S. Senate.
- Shomari Figures Makes History as Only the 4th Black Person Elected to Congress From Alabama Since Reconstruction
- Melesa Johnson Makes History as First Black Woman to Be Elected as a Prosecutor for Jackson County, Missouri
6. Kamala Harris Makes History as the First HBCU Graduate, First Black and Asian American Woman, and First Member of the Divine Nine to Appear on the Election Ballot as the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States of America.
We are beyond proud of VP Harris. What she accomplished in just 100 or so days on the campaign trail is remarkable. On the 56th anniversary of Shirley Chisholm’s historic election to Congress, nonetheless.
