Wade was involved every step of the way!
This past weekend, the Miami Heat honored Dwyane Wade with an eight-foot statue in his honor, CNN reports. The three-time NBA champion now makes history as the first NBA player in the franchise’s 37-year history to have a statue outside of the Kaseya Center in Biscayne Bay. Wade played 16 seasons in the NBA and is ranked No. 1 in Miami Heat history for points, assists and games played, one of just two players to have been on all three of the Heat’s title-winning teams before his retirement in 2019.
The bronze sculpture, which has drawn mixed reviews from fans, is a nod to Wade’s iconic “This is my house” celebratory moment during the double-overtime win against the Chicago Bulls in 2009. A milestone in a remarkable career that already earned Wade an induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame; he said he is wholly honored and basking in the moment.
“This is crazy. I wanted to feel this. Life goes by so fast and it’s very rare that we get to feel things because we’re always off to the next thing. So I didn’t prepare much because I wanted to feel this, man. I wanted to look at it,” Wade told attendees at the unveiling.
The city of Miami hosted a two-day celebration of Wade, which capped Monday night. Wade was present with his family for the festivities, taking them to the street named after him in Miami in between parties with his family, friends, and peers, who all came out to honor his incredible legacy.
At just 42 years old, Wade’s first chapter has been nothing short of amazing. We can’t wait to see what’s next. Congrats D Wade!
