The South got something to say!
South Sudan officially declared independence after decades of civil war just 13 years ago. Still, despite being the youngest country in the world, they’re showing up in a big way, playing in its first Olympics ever after qualifying as Africa’s top finisher in the World Cup last year, AP News reports.
As the Paris Olympics kicked off this weekend, South Sudan athletes ensured they would not be forgotten, securing the country’s first-ever Olympic basketball game victory against Puerto Rico. Fans cheered and waved the nation’s flag as players came to show up and show out.
“We’re not a secret anymore,” said South Sudan coach Royal Ivey after the Olympic victory.
The win came after a rocky start, with officials playing the wrong national anthem for South Sudan just before the game started. Players said they were undeterred, and the moment only gave them more motivation.
“It gave us fuel. It gave us fuel to the fire. Obviously, we felt disrespected when that happened…I feel like for us we’ve got to continue to show the world what we’re capable of,” said player Nuni Omot.
South Sudan won their first Olympic game, 90-79, and are set to play against Team USA at the Summer Olympics on Tuesday.
