She’s giving women’s sports the boost it deserves!
Whoopi Goldberg recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where the entertainment legend announced her newest business venture to help amplify women’s sports, Buzzfeed reports.
“I’m launching the first global women’s sports channel called AWSN (All Women’s Sports Network),” Goldberg told Fallon.
The new network is hoping to be the home for live women’s sports across the globe. AWSN will cover all women’s sports from soccer to cricket and tennis.
“If a woman is playing it, we’re showing it,” she said.
Already, AWSN has launched in several markets, with a U.S. launch on the horizon.
“We’re growing really fast. We’ve already launched in Asia, the Middle East, India on Jio (JioTV), and we’ve got a big announcement about our U.S. launch coming next week,” Goldberg continued.
One of the few entertainment icons to hold an EGOT, Goldberg has already made an indelible mark on the industry over the course of her four decade career and she has no signs of slowing down. Currently, she’s starring as Miss Hannigan in the Broadway musical Annie but Goldberg revealed that she’s always had a passion for sports but never played due to the discrimination young girl athletes faced..
“Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to play sports. My brother could play. He played baseball, he played softball, he played basketball, he played everything. And they would say, ‘Oh, hi little girl.’ It always pissed me off. So, for years, I’ve been talking to people and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could go around the world, start getting young athletes in high school so that we can grow with them and grow up with them?,” she explained.
Goldberg said the idea has been about 16 years in the making. She wants to really transform the relationship people have to women’s sports and one day venture into the collectible playing card industry for different women athletes. For Goldberg, it’s about making sure that women’s sports are just as amplified as men’s sports, something AWSN is taking pride in.
“I feel like that will help us show that athletics, when they’re done brilliantly…it doesn’t matter who’s doing it. We don’t really have that relationship with women’s sports,” said Goldberg.
No word yet on when AWSN will officially launch but we cannot wait! Check out Goldberg’s AWSN announcement below!
