It was a real full-circle moment for Mom!
Rapper Cordae recently appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series to perform hits from his most recent “Crossroads” album, Complex reports. A DMV native, Cordae paid homage to his hometown and showcased the lyrical prowess and nostalgic anthems that made him a celebrity. But the real magic came when he invited his mom, Jennifer Dunston, to perform with him during “O6 Dreamin.” The track samples a song she made as an aspiring musician and was a real full-circle moment for Dunston.
“This next song is called ‘06 Dreamin,’ it’s really special to my heart,” Cordae begins.
“It’s a story of irony, it’s a story about my mom. A true story of how she was an aspiring singer, and she just never got her big break to make it. Ironically enough… she’s living that dream through me because I’m here with y’all. I ended up sampling one of her old songs to make this son. But, like I said, we back home, man. I don’t got to use the sample, we got the real thing here today,” he continued.
The rapper then brought Dunston up with him, and his mom delivered a live performance of the track that blew audiences away. Looking every bit like his sister, she fulfilled a lifelong dream, one that made her baby proud and one he promised to pay her for.
“Can y’all make some noise for my Mama one time? Thank you, Mom, for blessing me. Appreciate you, Mom, the invoice is on the way. Don’t worry about it, OK? I got it,” he said after the song was over.
