Master P continues to expand his portfolio for the culture!
Hip Hop icon Master P just announced the expansion of his Rap Snacks brand to include a new line of foods as Uncle Bens and Aunt Jemima are taken off the shelves, Black Enterprise reports.
As a result of current racial unrest, corporations have been reckoning with their racist histories. One of those companies is Quaker Oats, which owns the famous Aunt Jemima brand and Mars Inc., home to Uncle Ben’s brand. The image of Aunt Jemima was inspired by a former slave Nancy Green, who was used as a mascot for the company. With escalating calls to boycott the brands, Master P offered an alternative solution, his own food brand.
The entertainment mogul made his transition into the snack industry over a decade ago with Rap Snacks, and now the company is focused on expanding its territory into breakfast foods. The new Black-owned foods will feature several items, including pancake mix, instant rice, and syrup.
“When you look at Aunt Jemima, and you look at Uncle Ben, we don’t own those products, we never did. We need to understand that we’re not going to be able to put money back in our community because we don’t own those brands,” Master P said. “Our grandparents [have] been having us buy those products because they think it’s people that look like us.”
This is just the latest in several business ventures he has, including shoes and ramen noodles.
“What we fighting for right now, we got to do it on a financial level, and start fighting for those rights on the financial side and start showing people that we have people that are thinking outside the box, coming up with great ideas,” he added.
No word yet on when the new breakfast foods will hit stores, but we can’t wait!
Congratulations P!
