Checkmate!
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed off on a “Black Lives Matter” mural and street renaming of the road leading directly to The White House, Upworthy reports.
Washingtonians and the world woke up Friday morning to discover a massive, bright yellow, “Black Lives Matter” insignia had been painted on the road leading to the White House. This comes after nearly two weeks of massive protests calling for justice and racial equality following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. If that wasn’t enough, Bowser, also renamed the street “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” The sign spans two blocks of 16th Street in Northwest, D.C. and ends directly in front of the St. John’s Episcopal Church. The same church 45 used as a prop in a photo op after violently weaponizing military personnel against peaceful protestors just 4 days ago.

“There was a dispute this week about whose street this is. Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear that this is DC’s street and to honor demonstrators who (were) peacefully protesting on Monday evening,” John Falcicchio, chief of staff for Bowser, said in a tweet.
Bowser has been widely applauded for her efforts, even with some residents acknowledging that there is still a lot of work to be done for native Black Washingtonians. Residents and protestors flocked to the streets to celebrate the historic mural, taking pictures and celebrating a moment of joy in what has otherwise been a hellish couple of weeks.

“We want to call attention today to making sure our nation is more fair and more just and that Black lives and Black humanity matter in our nation. The section of 16th street in front of the White House is now officially “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” Bowser told reporters.
Thank you for forcing progress forward Mayor Bowser!
