Thanks to “Mama O,” the students of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) in South Africa now have their own copy of Michelle Obama’s memoir, “Becoming.”
After being added to Oprah’s Book Club upon its release, the media mogul and philanthropist said, “This book is everything you wanted to know and so much you didn’t even know you wanted to know. I believe it’s going to spark within you the desire to think about your own becoming … It’s so well-written I can hear her voice; I can hear her expressions; I can feel her emotion. What she allows us to see is how she was able to discover, define and then refine her voice.”

Oprah opened her leadership academy five years after making a promise to Nelson Mandela in 2002 that she would build a school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa. “They are my greatest, deepest joy,” Oprah said in a recent interview with People magazine.
She added: “They’re the daughters I did not have. I never thought that that mothering instinct was something for me. I like babies, but I like them like, ‘Hi baby, okay, now go over there.’ I like children when they can actually speak to me and tell what is the problem. This is how having children was supposed to manifest for me.”
Upon graduating, 90% of the girls go on to pursue higher education from schools that include Harvard, Oxford, and South African universities. For the current students at OWLAG, Michelle Obama’s book will further affirm that they can become anything they want to be.
