He’ll be teaching under the new hip-hop degree program!
Lupe Fiasco is a Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist best known for his hits “Daydreamin’” and “Superstar.” A distinguished songwriter and producer, Fiasco takes pride in his craft as a lyricist and conveyor of socially conscious music that educates and entertains. Now, he’ll be lending his expertise to higher learning, recently named as a distinguished visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute, CBS News reports.
The Chicago native will teach rap under the Institute’s new hip-hop bachelor’s degree program. Spearheaded by professor and musician Wendel Patrick, the program aims to expound upon its century-long history of building excellent performers in the arts.
“The new Bachelor of Music in Hip Hop will combine the resources and strengths of Peabody’s industry-leading Music Engineering and Technology programs with the Conservatory’s long history of excellence in performance training,” reads the Institute’s program description.
Fiasco is no stranger to lending his artistry to academia. Previously, he served as a visiting professor and scholar at MIT, leading a programming competition for language and rhythm alongside Nick Montfort in Fall 2021. He continued his partnership with MIT’s Comparative Media Studies program during the 2022-2023 academic year. Fiasco took to social media to announce the news, saying he’s honored to continue his work at MIT and Yale while working with the Peabody Institute to share his gifts with students.
“The @peabodyinstitute is one of the oldest music conservatories in America. World renowned for its rigorous training and for producing some of the world’s greatest musicians, and I’m honored to contribute to this legacy doing what I love most, Rap. I’ll continue my teaching at @MIT and pursuing my fellowship at @Yale while advancing Rap studies and practice into the upper echelons of higher education at large,” he captioned a post.
Students looking to study under the “Food & Liquor” rapper can sign up for his class beginning in Fall 2025.
