In observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President and First Lady Obama decided to do their act of community service at Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter in Washington, D.C., where their daughters Malia and Sasha’s White House swing set now resides. The First Couple bought the swing set (also known as “Malia and Sasha’s Castle”) for the girls back in 2009 to “make the White House feel more like home”. Last week, they donated it to the family shelter after the incoming administration denied the Obama’s offer to keep it for the next first children.
As President Obama pushed one of the little girls on the swings at the shelter he said: “It’s bringing back memories…This is about how big Sasha was when we showed up.”(Malia was 10, and Sasha was 7)

President and First Lady Obama also helped residents of the family shelter paint the “Wall of Hope” Mural. A portrait that honors the life and legacy of civil rights icon Dr. King. In the words of President Obama: “Dr. King and those who marched with him proved that people who love their country can change it. As Americans, we all owe them a great deal.”
