The event, in its 10th year, awarded five honorees on March 23rd.
On a night filled with glamour, celebration, and philanthropy, Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress Fantasia Barrino Taylor and renowned DJ Derrick T. Jones, popularly known as DJ D-Nice, were among the distinguished honorees at the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Mayor’s Masked Ball in Charlotte. According to a press release, the event is held in support of the United Negro College Fund’s mission to invest in the future of young men and women by providing access to higher education. This fundraising gala celebrated the achievements of stellar individuals while emphasizing the importance of education and the contributions of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across North Carolina.
Fantasia Barrino Taylor, known for her powerhouse vocals and award-winning performances, was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. With a career spanning decades, Fantasia has left an undeniable mark on the music and film industries, earning critical acclaim and adoration from fans worldwide. Barrino Taylor, who is a student at Ohio-based HBCU Central State University, shared a gracious Instagram post and portrait following the event. “Thank you for recognizing and honoring me with the Lifetime Achievement Award,” she captioned.
Accompanying Fantasia in the spotlight was DJ D-Nice, who was honored with the Masked Hero award. Known for his innovative approach to DJing and his ability to bring people together through music, DJ D-Nice garnered widespread acclaim for his virtual DJ sets during the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting millions of viewers from around the globe. His infectious energy and commitment to uplifting others made him a source of positivity and inspiration in challenging times. He also took to Instagram to share his excitement–not only for the occasion but also for a sweet exchange with his fellow honoree. “Fantasia made me pinky swear that we will work together one day,” he wrote.
