We’re getting one for all the kids in our life!

April Showers is the founder and CEO of Afro Unicorn, a brand she created to celebrate the “uniqueness of women and children of color.” A friend began calling Showers a “unicorn,” referring to her success as a real estate agent, insurance business owner, and mom. This prompted Showers to begin using the unicorn emoji regularly in communication, but she realized that the character only came in white. After working with a graphic designer to create a unicorn in her likeness, the idea for the Afro Unicorn was birthed.

Today, the brand has catapulted into popularity, with the Afro Unicorn character available in various shades and more than 25 products, including apparel, puzzles, bedding, books, backpacks, haircare, collectibles, and the original plush toys. Now, the Afro Unicorn is available in Build-A-Bear, just in time for the holidays. Showers took to social media to share the news of the new partnership, calling it a dream come true.

“When dreams become reality. Our NEW Afro Unicorn collection is made of magic. Get ready for an Afronia adventure with enchanting arrivals now in stores and online, including our new Unique Afro Unicorn plush and adorable new fashions,” Showers captioned a post.

In addition to being in all Build-A-Bear Workshops nationwide, the Afro Unicorn products can also be found in Target, Kohl’s, Amazon, JCPenney, HomeGoods, NovaKids, and more than 3,800 Walmart stores nationwide. Showers holds the title of the first woman Black-owned business to own a licensed character brand in major retail stores and has truly built the brand into a movement, ensuring kids everywhere see themselves as pure magic.
