Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are a husband and wife duo out of Atlanta, with more than a decade under their belt in lifestyle photography. Their company, Creative Soul Photography, is an extension of their personalities and has become known for its innovative and unique visual storytelling. Their most recent series, AfroArt, went viral celebrating afro hair’s beauty through visually stunning pictures of children in ornate and glamorous garbs.

The couple has released a new book, Glory, inspired by the series, delving more into the story behind those children. Traveling across the world to places like Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Europe, the Bethencourts collected visually stunning photos of each child while also including essays telling their story. The new book “puts Black beauty front and center with more than 100 breathtaking photographs and a collection of powerful essays…a recognition and celebration of the versatility and innate beauty of Black hair, and Black beauty.”

The couple spoke to Because Of Them We Can about the inspiration behind Glory, saying, “We decided to create this book to go a little deeper and highlight the stories behind the art. We hope that readers will be able to see the beauty and diversity of Black kids across the African diaspora. We hope that kids viewing the book will be able to see themselves reflected in the stories included in the book and that it inspires them to overcome any obstacles they may face.”

Utilizing children as the focal point, as opposed to adults, allowed the couple to stretch the creative limits and create fantastical imaginations that may not have resonated with adult subjects. The Bethencourts hope to continue expanding their empowerment brand for children of color, looking to make even more products that encourage self-love and pride.
