Hate can’t win if we Make Love Known!

Today, we reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s example, which, decades later, still resonates with a profound truth: love, not hate, is the cornerstone of a just and equitable society. His life, dedicated to the pursuit of racial justice and equality, serves as a powerful reminder that true change begins within our communities.

In a world often plagued by division and discord, cultivating love and compassion within our communities is more crucial than ever. This doesn’t mean blind acceptance of wrongdoing but rather a conscious effort to understand, empathize, and seek common ground by spreading love always, in all ways.

Starting today and every day hereafter, we are making a declaration to Make Love Known, challenging everyone to join in our efforts of being, doing, and promoting good within our community with the goal of sparking a movement of positivity that triumphs in the face of a bleak and uncertain future. To help kick off efforts, here are a few ways to make love known in your community:

  • Volunteer your time: Lend a hand at a local soup kitchen, mentor a child, or assist with a community clean-up.
  • Support local businesses: Patronize small, independently Black-owned businesses that contribute to the economic vitality of your community.
  • Organize community events: Host block parties, potlucks, or movie nights to foster connection and build relationships.
  • Engage in respectful dialogue: Actively listen to the perspectives of others, even when you disagree.
  • Practice acts of kindness: Offer a helping hand to a neighbor, leave a positive note for a stranger, or simply smile at those you encounter.

These small acts of love, when multiplied across our communities, can create a ripple effect of positive change. They can bridge divides, foster understanding, and build a more just and equitable society. We need that now more than ever before.

In the words of Dr. King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Here’s to a centered focus to Make Love Known from here on out!
