Just in time to run the yard!
In 2020, Nike announced its #Yardrunners initiative, which aimed to honor HBCU alumni who “ran the yard” and made a notable impact. Since then, the initiative has continued through the release of various HBCU-themed collections annually, including sneakers and apparel that pay homage to historically Black colleges and universities.
“At Nike, we are committed to deepening our relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, working together with schools who share a long legacy in developing the next generation of athletes and global changemakers,” Nike previously told Blavity.
Now, Nike has teamed up with style expert Kahlana Barfield Brown to release her own Yardrunner sneaker in honor of homecoming season. Barfield Brown took to social media to share a new promo video for the show, noting that it’s a nod to the culture and her alma mater, Howard University, which just celebrated its centennial homecoming.
“Launching my own sneaker for the culture and announcing it right where it all began – at my alma mater, THE MECCA, during my class reunion and the 100th anniversary of Howard Homecoming. That’s divine timing. HBCU pride runs deep,” wrote Barfield Brown.
The brand was present at HU’s centennial celebration, throwing a Yardrunner’s party in the nation’s capital and announcing the release of their Jordan Brand and Howard University collection.
