Our childhood dreams have come true!
During the ‘90s, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell were teen stars with a legion of kid fans who faithfully watched their comedic skits on the popular sketch show “All That,” and their television show “Kenan & Kel.” “Good Burger” actually began as an original sketch on “All That,” Mitchell starring as the fast food worker Ed, which snowballed into the 1997 blockbuster of the same name, Variety reports. The “Good Burger” film grossed almost $24 million at the box office with just an $8 million production budget, becoming a teen cult classic. Over the years the pair have revived their “Good Burger” characters, reuniting for cameos in 2015 on “The Tonight Show,” and Mitchell reviving Ed again in 2019 in the “All That” reboot. This past week, Thompson and Mitchell visited “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” announcing that dreams were finally coming true, with a new “Good Burger” sequel set for release later this year.
“I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger! Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal! Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them,” Thompson said via statement.
“Good Burger 2” brings the dynamic duo back for another wild ride as Dexter Reed (Thompson) resumes his old job at the fast food joint, welcomed in by Ed (Mitchell) after another failed invention. Unfortunately, in Reed’s efforts “to get back on his feet,” he “devises a plan…[that] puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.”
Original film writers Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert have returned for the sequel as well as James III who will work alongside director Phil Traill. Nickelodeon Studios is set to produce and the film is set to be released via streaming on Paramount+.
“‘Good Burger’ is such a beloved movie that fans have cherished for years. Packed with comedy, cameos and plenty of Easter eggs from the original, ‘Good Burger 2’ will bring the nostalgia fans and a new generation of viewers together for another wild, hilarious ‘Good Burger’ adventure,” said Nickelodeon producers Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin.
Mitchell said he too is ecstatic to bring the hilarious comedy back to the big screen, hoping to create that same spark for a new generation of “Good Burger” fans.
“Ed is one of those timeless characters that has brought so much joy and laughter to fans, and it’s such a beautiful blessing to still be doing it after all these years. It’s super awesome to come back and continue the stories of Dex, Ed and Good Burger for both the people who grew up watching and their kids,” said Mitchell.
“Good Burger 2” is set to begin production this May with a release via Paramount+ before the year is out. We cannot wait to hear “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the good burger, can I take your order!”
