Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1943, Jamison’s journey to stardom began with her early training in jazz, tap, and ballet. Her talent preceded her and eventually caught the eye of Alvin Ailey, who invited her to join his groundbreaking Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965.

Jamison’s most celebrated role came in Ailey’s iconic solo, “Cry,” a poignant exploration of the Black woman’s experience. Her performance catapulted her into international superstardom, showcasing her extraordinary technical skill, emotional depth, and commanding stage presence. Beyond her own performances, Jamison’s impact on the dance world extended to her leadership of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. After Ailey’s passing in 1989, she assumed the role of artistic director, guiding the company to new heights of artistic excellence and global acclaim.

Her tenure was marked by artistic innovation and the continued dedication to Ailey’s mission of creating and performing works that reflected the African American experience. Under her leadership, the company saw unprecedented growth and recognition, cementing its place in the cultural spotlight.
