It was an historic day in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday when 36-year-old Randall Woodfin was sworn in by Judge Nakita Blocton as the city’s youngest mayor in modern history. Last month, Woodfin, an attorney and Morehouse graduate, defeated William Bell 58 percent (24,910 votes) to 41 percent (17,353 votes). He is now Birmingham’s 30th mayor.

“This is a new day at city hall,” Woodfin told AL.com in interview on Monday. “How we do business will be different, and how we hold adults accountable will be different. How we value and invest in our employees will be different and better too.”

Woodfin’s ultimate goal is to bring a “people-first vision for all 99 neighborhoods” and serve the needs of less privileged residents. He told the city of Birmingham:

“The 10 of us (Woodfin and the nine-member city council) collectively not only represent you, are not only committed to fighting for you, but wholeheartedly we believe in you. We believe in our city. We believe city hall has something to offer you.”

As you can see, his mother Cynthia Woodfin-Kellum couldn’t be any more proud of his accomplishment. Congratulations, Mayor Woodfin!
