The best moment of the 76th Golden Globe Awards came from the incomparable Regina King, who took home her first Golden Globe for her role in Barry Jenkins’ ‘If Beale Street Could Talk.’ The film, which is based on James Baldwin’s book and life, was also nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture Drama.
While accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, King made a promise to employ at least 50 percent women in her upcoming productions and she challenged anyone in a position of power to do the same, explaining:
“The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we are speaking for everyone. And I just want to say that I’m going to use my platform right now to say in the next two years, I’m making a vow and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything that I produce is 50 percent women.”
She also thanked Jenkins, who also directed “Moonlight,” for telling another rich story, saying “thank you for giving us a film that my son said to me when he saw it that it was the first time he really saw himself.”

It’s not hard to root for Regina King. For decades her performances have brought some of our favorite characters to life. Whether she was playing Brenda in ‘227,’ lesha in ‘Poetic Justice,’ Huey and Riley in ‘Boondocks’ or Sharon in ‘If Beale Street Could Talk.’ We have all loved and cheered for her.
King wasn’t the only Black person to win big. Mahershala Ali snagged a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in ‘Greenbook’ and Peter Ramsey (co-director) took home a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film, ‘Spiderverse.’
Although we thought more categories should’ve gone another way…
(cough: Best Director and Best Motion Picture Drama)… We are thrilled that King is finally getting the recognition she deserves. Congratulations to all of the winners!
