She’s one of Glamour’s mothers of the year!
Glamour Magazine released its annual Women of the Year honorees, highlighting influential women worldwide. Among the honorees are actress Taraji P. Henson, tennis icon Serena Williams, reproductive rights activist Kaitlyn Joshua, and Ms. Tina Knowles, Cécred chairwoman and one of Glamour’s Mothers of the Year, The Grio reports.
Knowles is the mother of superstars Beyoncé, Solange, and bonus daughter Kelly Rowland. She was honored as one of four matriarchs spotlighted for their role as the progenitors of some of the world’s megastars. Knowles spoke candidly about the early days of her daughter’s success and how she made sure that she was present and accounted for every step of the way so that she could keep watch as they navigated the industry.
“I started doing the girls’ hair to earn my keep so that I could travel with them because I wanted to protect them – not because I wanted to go and be on planes every day, because there was nothing glamorous about it, but it was to protect my kids. The industry can chew you up and spit you out. And I was determined that there were not going to be certain elements around them and that they weren’t going to get eaten up by that. It just became my mission. Those are your kids, and you want to protect them, and they need protection,” Knowles explained.
Today, Knowles maintains that same fierceness with her grandchildren, regularly defending them in the spotlight. While her daughters have gone on to be ultra-successful, she still is mom first. Now, her days of doing hair for the girls have come full circle, with Knowles now operating as chairwoman over Beyoncé’s Cécred haircare line, a nod to Knowles’ origin story and a love letter to Black women and their sacred hair care rituals. There is no doubt that Knowles has had a profound impact on their upbringing and their ability to rise above it all to the heights of superstardom.
She will be honored alongside the other Glamour Women of the Year in a celebration happening on October 8th.
