Ava DuVernay has done it again!
The first trailer for DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle In Time” was released on Saturday at the D23 Expo. The Disney project is an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1963 science fiction classic by the same name. Like the book, the film centers on a young girl named Meg Murry (played by newcomer Storm Reid) and her journey through space and time to rescue her scientist father who went missing after working on a top-secret government mission.
“The first image I had in my mind was to place a brown girl in the role of Meg, a girl traveling to different planets and encountering beings and situations that I’d never seen a girl of color in,” DuVernay said. “I was interested in that and in a heroine that looked like the girls I grew up with.”
The all-star cast includes: Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, and Chris Pine and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Meg’s parents, Dr. Alex and Kate Murry. Also, Deric McCabe and Levi Miller take on the role of Meg’s little brother and friend.
DuVernay made sure to include diversity in the casting because she wanted people “that looked like you, that looked like the real world.”
By being at the helm of the movie, DuVernay has made history yet again. This time, as the first African American woman to direct a $100 million film. If you thought DuVernay couldn’t get any more amazing, think again and watch the teaser trailer for her latest film below.
“A Wrinkle In Time” is set to hit theaters on March 9, 2018.
