The Lawrence sisters are not letting their difficult childhoods hold them back!
The six eldest Lawrence sisters are currently planning on becoming nurses after spending 10 years experiencing homelessness as kids. The sisters range in age from 19 to 25. And this past August the sisters enrolled in a master’s program in public health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and will head to nursing school after they finish the program.
The sisters’ parents, David and Yonette, lost their home in Queens in 2013. After that, their family began staying with friends and family, according to People.
“It was challenging,” Lauren, 24, said. “There were a lot of very bumpy, depressing times.”
David encouraged his daughters to continue their education despite their frequent moves. They listened to their father and obtained their GEDs in 2019 after being homeschooled. Dominique, 25, said, “He didn’t want what we were going through to hold us back.”
The sisters proceeded to attend Nassau Community College on Long Island and graduated two years later. Then they enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury and earned their bachelor’s degrees in public health in May.
“It’s been quite an adventure,” Danielle, 22, said. “But what really pulled us through is our faith in God and in each other.”
David added, “I’m so happy they’ve done this together. I always tell them, ‘Life’s not fair. And when it throws you a curveball, you gotta adjust to it and keep going.”
