Instilling HBCU Pride Early!

Gender reveals are all the rage, with couples taking creative approaches to announce the gender of their new addition. LaTasha and Robert Comer used this opportunity to showcase their SpelHouse pride with a Spelman versus Morehouse themed reveal.

The mom-to-be, an alumna of Spelman, and her husband, who matriculated at both Clark Atlanta and Morehouse, met on match.com several years ago. They married last December and said in an exclusive interview with Because Of Them We Can they wanted to recognize the importance of their heritage and school pride.

“Once I started thinking about gender reveals, I instantly thought of an HBCU theme because we loved our HBCU experiences and are so proud of our culture,” LaTasha told BOTWC. “I think now, more than ever, it’s so important to show how proud we are to be unapologetically Black and educated, and our goal is to raise our children with that mindset.”

Comer enlisted the help of two Black women-owned businesses in the Atlanta area, Gimmie Cake Bakery and AMEE Events, to create the adorable acknowledgment of the two HBCUs historical connection.

Her sister and owner of the bakery, Tamika Swain, who crafted the design and desserts for the reveal, said she couldn’t wait to work on the event together. When her sister told her she wanted to incorporate nods to the two preeminent HBCUs in Atlanta, her response was, “Oh, say no more!” She told BOTWC she was doing this, “For the culture!”

The mom-to-be, who’s studying medicine at Morehouse, said she and her husband don’t have any names picked out yet since they thought they’d be having a boy, but are excited to meet their future Spelmanite.

Congratulations! We wish you a safe and happy delivery!
