The HU love runs deep!
Actress Taraji P. Henson recently appeared on Jenna & Friends and teamed up with fellow Howard alumna Phylicia Rashad to surprise a deserving Howard University student, Trinity Garrison, with a life-changing scholarship.
Garrison, a junior musical theater major and first-generation Caribbean-American student, shared her journey during an interview with TODAY. She reflected on how attending an HBCU shaped her artistry and empowered her to honor her family’s sacrifices. “I think Howard has allowed me to become an advocate for the Black experience, for women, and for humanity. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Howard University,” she said.
On the show, Henson greeted Garrison with the iconic Howard call: “HU…” to which Garrison enthusiastically replied, “You know!” Both actresses shared words of encouragement, with Henson reminding her, “We did it, you can do it. Seeing people you admire succeed is the proof you need.”
Rashad then revealed that Garrison would be the next recipient of the Dr. Andrew A. Allen scholarship, a fund created in honor of her father. Henson added to the excitement by announcing that her partners were contributing an additional $5,000, bringing the total scholarship to $25,000 to support Garrison’s theater studies.
“To be seen this way—I’m so grateful,” Garrison said, holding back tears. Watch the full video below:
