What an accomplishment for the entire family!
Actress Olivia Washington, daughter of the legendary Denzel Washington, just wrapped up her time on Broadway starring in Alice Childress’ Wine in the Wilderness, Playbill reports. The play received rave reviews and was the directorial debut for Tony Award winner LaChanze (The Color Purple), running from early March through April 13th at the CSC’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater.
Recently, Olivia visited Good Morning America to talk about her play and how exciting it felt to be on Broadway at the same time as her father, who’s currently starring in Othello.
“I don’t think we knew how special it would be until we were able to go to each other’s openings, and it’s kind of like, ‘Oh wow, wait, this is a very important moment, isn’t it?,” Olivia recalled.
The family was front and center supporting each other, and while it didn’t hit them until that moment, Olivia said the real magic was just getting to go home to her family every night and get a home-cooked meal.
“I just feel so lucky firstly that they’re in the city so I can go home and my mom can make me dinner,” Olivia said laughing.
It’s a full-circle moment for the Washington family. Denzel is currently making history with Othello, which has become the highest-grossing Broadway play ever and one he starred in at the beginning of his career more than 40 years ago. Meanwhile, the next generation is carrying the torch, Olivia wrapping up a successful Off-Broadway run while her brothers, Malcolm, and John David, are still relishing in the success of their “Piano Lesson” film, which premiered on Netflix last year from famed playwright August Wilson.
